Ambitious, driven, and steadily carving out his place in the industry, Jack Topalian joins one of television’s most talked-about productions. In this exclusive interview with RYMER&Co Magazine, he reflects on his journey, his craft, and the opportunities shaping the next chapter of his career.

We have readers in different countries, could you introduce yourself for those who might not know you?

I was born in Yerevan, Armenia and emigrated to United States when I was a young boy. We had relatives in the San Francisco Bay Area, so that’s where we settled and where I grew up. After finishing college, I went into the Construction & Real Estate industry. Afterwards, I opened my own business, later got married and raised 3 beautiful children. Then I somehow got into acting, and in 2010 my family and I moved to Los Angeles and so I can advance my acting career.

What first drew you to acting? What was the moment you realized acting was more than just an interest and something you truly wanted to pursue professionally?

I never had ambitions of being an actor when I was growing up, it kind of just happened by accident. But once I started taking classes, getting into scene study, and working with others, I really liked it and it was all I can think about. So, I pursued it with passion, determination, and a never give up attitude. Later I got cast in a TV show and realized this was something I wanted to do professionally, so I went for it.

You started acting later than many people in Hollywood. Did that life experience outside the industry help shape you as an actor today?

Yes, I think that life experience has been a huge benefit for me and the types of roles that I have played. Since I've been in business for many years, and have traveled extensively, it allowed me to tap into the various kinds of people I have met over the years, and then bring some of those people and experiences into the various roles & characters I have played or will play.

What has been the biggest challenge in transitioning from business into entertainment?

It’s actually very similar in a lot of ways and I adapted quickly. Acting takes planning, strategy, discipline, and preparation, just like I’ve done in my business life.

I would say the biggest difference or challenge is that as an actor, I’m the product or commodity and I’m responsible for making sure that I bring the best of me, every time, at an audition or on set. Otherwise, I approach it as a business and try to make sure that whatever I’m doing becomes successful, so I can have more opportunities moving forward.

What was your first reaction when you found out you were joining Euphoria?

I was very excited and a bit nervous at the same time. But once I was on set, I knew what my role was, and what I needed to do and what was expected of me.

Euphoria has built a huge global fanbase over the years. Did you feel any pressure stepping into such an iconic series? Did anything surprise you about the cast or the production once you arrived on set?

I approached it with confidence, just like I do with every role, but I was stepping into a world that was well established, with some of today's top stars, and a show that is a global phenomenon.

I was very grateful and humbled by the fact that Sam Levinson chose me for this very important and critical role, opposite Jacob, Sydney, Maude, Alexa and others. That showed the trust and confidence he had in my acting abilities and I wanted to make sure I brought my A+ game to set every day. Everyone on the cast and crew was very warm and welcoming, and I felt at home right away. Jacob, Sydney, and I spent a lot of time hanging out between scenes and we got to know each other well.

What was it like working alongside actors such as Zendaya and Colin Farrell?

Unfortunately, I never got to work directly with Zendaya, but working with Colin was great. He is such an amazing actor and human being. Generous with his time and talent.

You’ve played many different types of characters throughout your career. What kind of role do you feel challenges you the most?

Usually, when I read a script for a particular role, that is being offered for me, I can always see myself being that person. But sometimes, it takes a few rounds of reading before I fully grasp the character and story. Of course, I still have to develop the character and do all the work required before filming. With historical, mostly biblical figures, I have to do a bit more searching and prepping but eventually I find what I need. Then, of course, once on set, the director will guide me and give my role more clarity. The same is true when I play real life figures, because I want to make sure I capture the person correctly and do it justice.

What advice would you give to people who feel it’s “too late” to follow a dream?

My mind set is that, It’s never too late to follow your dreams. Take it from someone who went into the entertainment industry in his early 40s, and I still get up every morning with energy, drive, and determination. I’m like a kid on set and being able to work as an actor, is a gift. I take it with humility and gratefulness. So, if you really are passionate about something you want to pursue, you should do it, not take no for an answer and never look back.

Finally, what’s next for Jack Topalian after Euphoria and Sugar?

I’ve filmed a couple of features that should get released later the year or early next year. Aside from that, I’m working on a new show and always auditioning for things my agents send me out for. Of course, I’m also developing my own projects. I’m writing, meeting new people, and keeping busy with travel, gym, and family and friend activities. I’m grateful for everything in my life!
