Danielle Chand Talks Elle, Acting and Her Rising Career on Amazon Prime

Every new series introduces fresh faces ready to leave their mark, and Elle is no exception. As Shannon in Amazon Prime's highly anticipated prequel, Danielle Chand brings warmth, authenticity and a fresh perspective to the beloved universe. We spoke with the rising actress about her journey, the experience of joining the series, and the ambitions driving her career forward.

We have readers in different countries. Could you introduce yourself for those who might not know you?

Hi, my name is Danielle Chand. I am from Vancouver, Canada!

What first drew you to acting? And how did it feel when you found out you had been cast in Elle?

I was always super into performing. I did every elementary school talent show, singing songs with my friend or up on stage with my stepdad playing guitar while I sang.

I was in disbelief. I couldn’t believe it. I was in class at the time and just started crying, haha. A moment I’ll never forget.

What can you tell us about your character, Shannon, and her relationship with Elle Woods?

Shannon and Elle hit it off right away! They relate to each other through fashion and even have the same favorite show. Their dynamic is so cute and protective.

Elle is set in the 1990s. Did you enjoy stepping into that era through fashion, music, and culture?

Yes, it was really fun to dive into the fashion, listen to grunge music, and just feel like I was in a different era from reality. I actually asked my stepdad to help me curate a '90s playlist because he's a musician!

Without spoilers, what do you think fans are going to love most about Elle?

Fans are going to feel the heart and comedy of the show. It’s so heartfelt and emotional, but also so deeply funny.

You've trained in improv, theater, film, and voice work. Which area challenged you the most as a performer?

Oh, they all have their own challenges! If I had to choose, I would say film and television, only because there is a lot of technical stuff besides just acting. And if there’s an emotional scene, you have to get to that level of emotion at least three or four times, which can be difficult at times. But I really could list my challenges with each one individually, haha.

What has been the biggest lesson you've learned so far in your acting career?

I think the biggest lesson came when I first started, which was realizing that I struggle with anxiety. I had to find ways to cope with it because I really did want to be an actor. Now, I always remind myself to have so much fun while doing the work and just trust myself.

You've mentioned storytelling as a way to explore emotional truth and freedom. What kinds of stories are you most passionate about telling in the future?

I would be interested in being part of telling stories that are a little darker, more centered around the hardships and traumas that people face. There’s something so beautiful about spreading a message and having it resonate with people. I want the audience to feel something and take something away from my work.

Finally, after Elle, what goals or dream projects would you love to pursue next?

My dream project would be a protagonist role where someone really goes through the darker parts of life, but we see them persevere. A coming-of-age story would be really inspiring and exciting to do!
